Prince William Wants To Return To Air Ambulance Work Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Duke of Cambridge Begins First Shift As Air Ambulance Pilot

Like the rest of us, Prince William and Kate Middleton are following social distancing guidelines and staying home amid the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. Along with their three children, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are isolating at their Anmer Hall estate in Norfolk, England. Though he has no immediate plans to go back to work, Prince William is reportedly going back to work as an air ambulance pilot.

The Duke of Cambridge spent two years flying medics to emergencies before stepping down in 2017 in order to fulfill his royal duties full time. “William has been seriously considering returning as an air ambulance pilot to help in the current pandemic," a source told The Sun. "He knows the whole country is doing its bit and he wants to help. But it’s complicated as he was originally grounded from the job so that he could become a senior working royal."

While Prince William is eager to help out and put his air ambulance pilot experience to good use, he also knows his role a senior royal "is even more important now given that Charles has been ill, Harry has walked away with Meghan, and Andrew has been effectively barred from public life. But William is very keen to do anything he can to help," the source explained.

Due to Prince William's status as not only a full-time working member of the Royal Family, but as a direct heir to the throne, "there are all sorts of practicalities to overcome" for him to return to his old job. In addition to the practicalities of royal life, he'd also have to figure out how to fit in "on shift patterns" at the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Despite some hurdles, Prince William is "in the right place now if he wants to do it," according to the source. When he was first working as an air ambulance pilot, he and Kate were based in the Norfolk home full-time so Prince William could be close to work.
